The Book of Illusions

Multiple Reviews

Is this a recommendable book? It’s well written if you don’t mind being taken for plot rides. Most books do their best to apologise for being books, they are ingratiating and attempt to amuse or entertain. Not so with Auster. Uncompromising and unapologetic, his crafted prose  plays tug of war with crafty plot. This is a book for the determined reader, who doesn’t take too much offence to being abused. The narrator is dead but he doesn’t know it. Feisty females, a few of whom happen to be murderers. Evocative passages on silent movies.

For intransigent readers.
